Info about CRAFT NIGHT for Chalk Cloth & Tutus
Please bring:
scissors, cutting mat (if needed with a rotary cutter), sewing machine with black thread (if able to bring- let Kelsey or Lynnea know), tape measure, and any other supplies your project requires.

Prep for tutus-- If you'd like to have your tulle prepared prior to coming (will make assembly much quicker), here are a few things you can do:
  • Cut tulle so width is between 4-6 inches. It doesn't matter how exact; some can be wider, some more narrow. The tulle is very forgiving once it is fluffed up, and you cannot tell if you've cut your strips crooked or not.
  • Know the approximate size of the child's waist (and bring enough elastic for that measurement). Determine how long you want the tutu to be: (about 15 inches works well for a 2-3 yr old.) Keep in mind that the tulle will poof and not lay flat against the body, thus seeming shorter than the actual length of the strips of tulle. Double this length amount (15 in. doubled= 30 in.), and then cut your 4-6 inch strips into lengths of 30 inches or so.
  • In using mine as an example for reference: I had 1 1/2 yards of 3 different shades (4 1/2 yards total). So each shade was 54 inches long and I cut each of those pieces in half. This left my strips of tulle to be 27 inches (making the tutu 13-14 inches in length, since the strips make up half of the length of the tutu). Also, I used 4 1/2 yards and mine wasn't as poofy as I would have liked-- so closer to 5 or even 6 yards may be a better amount of tulle to bring. You can always add more later if you decide that what you've chosen isn't the look you're going for.
  • Remember also to bring decorative embellishments and a glue gun if you'd like to add those (flowers, ribbons, etc).

Tues. Nov 17th Crafts @ Kent Bldg, 7pm

We'll be learning how to make 2 of the items that were featured at September's Souper Saturday "DIY (Do It Yourself) table"

Chalk Cloth Doodle Roll Out, taught by Kelsey Judd
Cost:$4, includes chalk cloth, batting, elastic to hold closed after being rolled up, vinyl pocket to hold supplies, chalk, and sponge for erasing.
You provide: 1/3 yard of cotton fabric (sorry in the sign-ups, I mis-typed and said 1 1/3. It is just 1/3).
There are a few sewing machines at the church and we will bring a few also, but please bring your own if it is easy to transport and you are making more than one.

This "chalk cloth" is an actual fabric that you can write on like a chalkboard. It has a roll-up design with a see-thru pocket to hold a box of chalk and a damp sponge for erasing. A great "quiet book" type idea for kids of all ages-- either your own, or a grandchild, niece/nephew, or other child you know. Would also make a cute Christmas gift or stocking stuffer.

No-Sew Tutu, taught by Natalie Bradshaw & Lynnea Raban
Free
You provide: about 3-6 yards of tulle (depending on how full and how long you want it to be and the waist size of the child it's for). This could be a combo of various colors, or just one solid color. Also, a piece of no-roll elastic (about 1 1/2-2 inches wide- mine was about $1.27 in the Wal-Mart craft aisle) or thick ribbon to tie your tulle onto. Elastic length will be about child's waist size (perhaps minus an inch or so, depending on how much stretch you want there to be). And ribbon will be several inches longer than waist size so there is room to tie the ends. A longer length is easier to work with and can always be shortened later on. These tutus can also be embellished with other decorative ribbons, beads, or fake flowers if you desire. Bring any embellishments you may want to use.
NOTE: If you are unsure about how much tulle to buy, here is my example you can use as a reference point. I used 3 colors of tulle (1 1/2 yards each) so 4 1/2 yards total-- each bought from Wal-Mart off the bolt. It was a good amount for a 2 1/2 year old's body. I could even have used a little more to have made it more poofy, but would have struggled with less than that amount. (The one I'm referring to is not the one pictured below).

Reminder: Sign-ups for these crafts are in the RS binders. Or you may contact Kelsey, Natalie, or myself directly if you'd like to participate or if you have questions.
Thanks,
Lynnea Raban
